Getting started - FAQ

What type of Yoga will I be doing during the class?
There are many types of yoga. John uses features from several types but basically it is a blend of Hatha, Ashtanga, and some Yin Yoga. The Sage Patanjali described Ashtanga in his Sutras (threads or texts) some 2200 years ago. Ashtanga is a Sanskrit (ancient Indian language) word that means 8 limbs. Stretching is just one of those 8 limbs.
Hatha means Sun/Moon and generally refers to all opposites - hot cold, wet dry, dark light etc. Hatha Yoga focuses on building physical and mental strength in a gentle way while seeking to create a balance of opposites.
Which class would suit me?
There are four types -
1) Beginners
2) Level 1 - suitable for those who have completed the beginners class and those practitioners wanting a slower less strenuous session
3) Level 1.5 - a step up from level 1 for practitioners wanting a more strenuous session
4) Level 2 - suitable for more advanced practitioners and those wanting a faster, stronger session
How long does a class go for?
Each class goes for 1hr and 15 minutes and includes breathing, stretching, relaxation and meditation. Please arrive 5 to 10 mins before the advertised starting time so that there is no interruption once the class is started and to ensure the class starts and finishes on time.
What equipment do I need to get started?
You need a yoga mat, strap, block and a blanket. I can supply the mat, strap and block so all you need to bring is a blanket (cooler months). If you decide to continue with Yoga then you should purchase your own mat, strap and block. These are not expensive and last for a long time.
What should I wear?
All participants should wear snug fitting clothing. Loose clothing is not suitable as yoga involves movements that could lead to a lack of suitable coverage. Yoga is done in bare feet and any footwear should be removed at the door.
What about food and drink?
Food should not be eaten before a class - a break of three hours is preferable but no less than 1 hour if you have only had a snack. Water can be brought to class but again it is preferable to hydrate yourself prior to the class. Yogic philosophy holds that drinking water during the practice quenches the yogic fire that is produced and thereby partially negates the benefits. However, one should not allow oneself to become dehydrated.
Who can attend the classes?
The classes are open to Men and Women over the age of 16 years. There is no upper age limit. Children over the age of 12 can attend but must be accompanied by an adult who is participating in the class.
How much will it cost to attend a class?
Each class costs $15.00 per person
What results can I expect from a class?
Results can be felt from the very first class. However, like any exercise system it must be carried out on a regular basis to gain the maximum benefit. Yoga aims to do the following:
1) Build strength across all muscle groups
2) Increase flexibility of the entire body
3) Rid the body of toxins
4) Calm the mind and relax the body.
What Yoga etiquette should I follow at the class?
1) Arrive a few minutes before the class is to start
2) Leave shoes at the door
3) Sign on to the attendance sheet
4) Turn phone to silent (or leave it in the car)
5) Find a spot to place your mat facing towards the teacher
6) Do your "personal best" and don't worry about what any other student is doing. There will be varying levels of skill in any given class. Yoga is not a team sport.
